Pilgrimages

The Sanctuary, built by the Jesuit fathers starting in 1608, as well as a small artistic jewel, is a centre of Aloysian spirituality and a destination for pilgrimages from all over the world. It stirs a certain emotion to walk in the footsteps of San Luigi Gonzaga, to find in the various 'signs' that history has preserved the stages of such a focused and coherent spiritual journey; and it is certainly enriching.

Many have faithfully walked this itinerary, from the 1600s to today, and have drawn near to that 'Supreme Good' which St Louis compares to a 'sea without shores and without bottom'.

Pope John Paul II also came here in 1991, an unforgettable pilgrim: 'I am here in this historic sanctuary to celebrate with you Saint Luigi Gonzaga, a young model for youth, who lived long ago but is still very relevant, because he was devoted to values that never fade [...]'.
